Mad Hutters - lashing together

Our current set of huts are made by lashing sticks together.
We've learnt a clove hitch knot which we used to secure our rope to one stick.
Once it was secure, we lashed the sticks together by winding around and between the two sticks, finishing off with another clove hitch.
Then we stretched out our sticks to make an 'A' frame.

This book "Go Wild: Be a Survivor", by Chris Oxlade, has lots of good tips.

We started in class on Tuesday with sticks and our smaller ropes:

On Wednesday we took some bamboo stakes outside and made shelters.
We lashed the stakes together.
Two 'A' frames and a stick leaning on top make a pretty good tent frame.... although they can topple over!

All this 'lashing' reminds me of Enid Blyton and 'Lashings of ginger beer!'

Making playdough

Here we are making play dough.
Another experience to inspire our procedural writing.

After making the dough, we wrote what we needed and the steps we followed.

Later, in art, we rolled the dough, printed patterns on it, and created shapes.

How to make... Popcorn!

Room 19 made popcorn on Wednesday, and then wrote about what we did.
It tasted so good we needed to make a second batch for morning tea.

Hiroshi poured in corn kernels
Max put the popcorn maker
Sean caught the popcorn as it came out

We watched the popcorn jump around
Olesya sprinkled on some salt

Tarps and Knots

We put our knot tying skills into practise.
Our first goal was to make huts by tying tarpaulins to chairs.
Our second goal was to try outside with tarps, ropes, tent pegs and trees.
Here's how we went
